Superb parrots are listed as vulnerable on the Australian Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Description

The Superb Parrot is a distinctive large, bright grass-green parrot with a long, narrow tail and sharply back-angled wings in flight. Males have yellow foreheads and throats and a red crescent that separates the throat from the green breast and belly. Females are slightly duller green and have a dull, light blue wash in place of the males’ red and yellow markings.

Distribution

The Superb Parrot is found throughout eastern inland NSW. On the South-western Slopes their core breeding area is roughly bounded by Cowra and Yass in the east, and Grenfell, Cootamundra and Coolac in the west. Birds breeding in this region are mainly absent during winter, when they migrate north to the region of the upper Namoi and Gwydir Rivers.

Distribution and habitat

An Australianendemic, the superb parrot is restricted to the dry (sclerophyll) woodlands of New South Wales and Victoria. There is estimated to be at least 10,000 individuals in the wild.[8]

Habitat and ecology

• Inhabit Box-Gum, Box-Cypress-pine and Boree Woodlands and River Red Gum Forest.
• In the Riverina the birds nest in the hollows of large trees (dead or alive) mainly in tall riparian River Red Gum Forest or Woodland. On the South West Slopes nest trees can be in open Box-Gum Woodland or isolated paddock trees. Species known to be used are Blakely’s Red Gum, Yellow Box, Apple Box and Red Box.
• Nest in small colonies, often with more than one nest in a single tree.
• Breed between September and January.
• May forage up to 10 km from nesting sites, primarily in grassy box woodland.
• Feed in trees and understorey shrubs and on the ground and their diet consists mainly of grass seeds and herbaceous plants. Also eaten are fruits, berries, nectar, buds, flowers, insects and grain.

Due to ongoing habitat loss in Australia, small population size and limited range, the superb parrot was evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species,[1] until it was downlisted to Least Concern in 2020.[12] It is listed on Appendix II of CITES.

Sexing

Females do not have a yellow mask or red band on the throat. But in them, the thighs are red, the eyes brown and the underside of the tail is pink. They also have less brilliant colors than males.

Taxonomy

First described by French naturalist Desmarest in 1826, the superb parrot, a dimorphic species,[4] is one of three species in the genus Polytelis of long-tailed parrots.

Common names include superb parrot and, in avicultural circles, Barraband’s parrot or parakeet, named after the artist Jacques Barraband who illustrated it for Francois Le Vaillant in 1801[5] or green leek (although the last is applied to several unrelated species).[6] Its closest relative is the regent parrot.[citation needed]

Threatening processes

During February–June 2005, timber logging in the Barmah State Forest destroyed 60 percent of the nesting colonies of the superb parrot (6,000 tonnes or 6,600 short tons of river red gums): with fewer than 150 breeding in Victoria, this has severely compromised their chances of survival.[15][16]

In December 2008, dozens of reports were filed of superb parrots being hit by cars.[17]NPWS wildlife officials speculated that the parrots had gorged on grain spilled from an uncovered truck and became unable to move, eventually being hit by automobiles.
